AN OVERFLOW OF PUPILS
POSITION AT SURREY PARK SCHOOL ACCOMMODATION PROVES INADEQUATE When the Surrey Park school opened on Monday, the staff was faced with the position of having about 30 more pupils than the school could accommodate. This school was opened last year to serve the East Invercargill district and was built to accommodate 240 pupils. When the roll call was completed on Monday, it was found that 267 pupils wanted admission. The Southland Education Board had no option but to advise the 37 children in Standard 5 and 6 at Surrey Park to go to the Middle or North schools, where there is ample accommodation. The board hopes that by the end of the year the accommodation at Surrey Park will be sufficient to meet any future requirements. It was pointed out yesterday that had the intermediate school been built such a position would not have arisen. The overflow of pupils at Surrey Park illustrates clearly the rapid growth of the district. Many houses have been built recently and 80 are now in the course of erection. There are also many young families in the Surrey Park district and this accounts for the large number of young children wanting admission.
