Mr W. M. C. Denham, M.P., will leave Invercargill by the express this morning for Wellington on parliamentary business.

Inspector H. Martin, of Christchurch, is relieving Inspector T. Gibson at Invercargill during the latter’s absence on annual leave.

The Rev. H. u. Ryourn will be inducted to the Mastership of Knox College, Dunedin, on March 6, when the Rev. T. M. C. Hay will preach the occasional sermon, and the Rev. A. C. Watson will address master and the students. Mr Ryburn attended the Southland Boys’ High School from 1910 to 1915.

Mr C. C. Lange, president of the Southland Master Bakers’ and Pastrycooks’ Association, Mr C. O. McKeown, of Orepuki, a member of the executive of the New Zealand Master Bakers’ and Pastrycooks’ Association, and Messis W. W. Millar and 11. L. Laing will leave Invercargill at the end of the week for Auckland, where they will attend the annual conference of the New Zealand Master Bakers’ Association.

Mr James Manson, president of the Southland Hardware Association, and Messrs M. Henderson and R. F. Frampton will go to Wellington at the weekend to attend the annual conference of the New Zealand Hardwaie Meichants’ Guild.

Mr W G. Lindsay, a former Southland and New Zealand representative Rugby player, who left Winton many years' ago to live in Dunedin, is at present on a holiday visit to Southland. He is staying at Descheler’s Hotel.

Mr Anderson Tyrer, the English composer, conductor, and pianist, who has been in New Zealand for nearly a year, is to leave New Zealand for Australia toward the end of next month. Aftci conducting examinations in the Commonwealth, he is to go on a similar mission to South Africa, after which he hopes to visit his children in England. He will be accompanied by Mrs Tyrer.

The Rev. Father A. Gavan, of R’iverton, who has been transferred to Invercargill, will begin his new duties on Saturday. The Rev. Father J. Fitzgibbon, who has been relieving the Rev. Father C. Ardath at Queenstown, will succeed Father Gavan. Messrs F. Penman, R. Sloan and G. Wilson, who are joining the Royal New Zealand Air Force, were bidden farewell on Tuesday evening by fellow workers on the staff of H. and J. Smith Ltd. The general manager. Mr J. S. Robbie, presented each man with a gift and congratulated him on ihe step he had taken. Staff-Sergeant G. C. Dryden, of Invercargill, who was seriously injured in a motor accident in Egypt, has made satisfactory progress and is now convalescing, according to advice received in Invercargill. Mr Herries Beattie, of Waimate, author of “Tikao Talks,” and "The First White Born in Otago,” is visiting Bluff. Wing-Commander S. Wallingford, New Zealand liaison officer at the Air Ministry in London, will return to Nev/ Zealand shortly for duty at Air Force headquarters. Succeeding him as liaison officer will be Squadron-Leader F. R. Newell, who has worked with WingCommander Wallingford as assistant liaison officer for the past .18 months. Mr C. A. Worthington, who has been tutor to drama groups in Otago and Canterbury for the past six years, has now received a permanent appointment in that capacity from the University of Otago and Canterbury University College. He is spending the first half of this year in Otago and Southland. He left Dunedin yesterday for Riverton and intends to conduct his first series of drama groups in the western district of Southland. Mr Worthington is due to return to Dunedin about Easter time to take charge of the city drama class of the Workers’ Educational Association, and conduct groups in the suburbs and nearby centres. A message from Melbourne states that the War Cabinet has appointed Mr Frank Norton official artist with the Royal Australian Navy. Mr Norton, who is 24 years of age, was born in New Zealand.

Dr R. J. Mcllroy, Ph.D., M.Sc., A.1.C., of Hamilton, has been appointed lecturer in chemistry at the Canterbury University College/ Dr Mcllroy graduated at the Victoria University' College, Wellington, and the Birmingham University. He has been engaged in agricultural research at the Ruakura Animal Research Station since his return from England in 1938. Mr Charlton Edgar, who has been on the staff of the King Edward Technical College. Dunedin, for the past 10 years as an instructor in drawing and painting, has been appointed head of the art department of the college and head of the Dunedin Art School. Mr Edgar took his M.A. degree at Edinburgh University and his diploma of art at the Edinburgh Art School in 1928, and joined the staff of the Technical College in 1931. In 1938 he went abroad to carry out research work in child art in the United States, Canada, and Great Britain. He gained his degree of bachelor of education at Edinburgh University in 1939, and returned to Dunedin at the beginning of last year. Mr Edgar will succeed Mr Gordon Tovey, who has been appointed lecturer in art at the Dunedin Training College. The Rev. Father J. W. Dowling, S.M., M.A., has been appointed head master of a new secondary' school erected in Hastings for the Catholic boys of the district. The first assistant will be the Rev. Father A. Hill, of St. Bede’s College, Christchurch.
