RETURNED SOLDIERS’ ASSOCIATION A small deputation led by Mr Abraham Wachner, of Invercargill, waited on a meeting of the executive of the Gore Returned Soldiers’ Association to explain a scheme for helping in the rehabilitation of returning soldiers with the help of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union and other organizations. Mr Wachner was the main speaker and he explained his ideas. The main point was the formation of a friendly organization to aid the men with advice and hospitality if necessary on their return to civil life. The president (Mi - P. R. Stewart) thanked Mr Wachner for his address, and stated that with the further working out of details Mr Wachner’s ideas could be made into a very good scheme. Those present at the meeting were: Messrs P. R. Stewart (president), A. C. Steel, J. McDonald, W. H. Sadlier, A. L. McDowell, E. J. Columb, M. Green, W. D. Shelton, F. M. Murray, C. M. Wilson, J. Ritchie and G. L. Gerken (secretary). The secretary reported that the financial membership of the association Stood at 522, compared with 512 last meeting night, and 448 at the same period last year. The memberships for the sub-associations were: West Otago 77, Mataura 61, Lumsden 60. Advice was also received from the general secretary (Wellington) that Gore occupied 14th position on the membership ladder for all New Zealand associations with 507 members at the end of December. The secretary reported that all picnic arrangements were well in hand, and that a special train had been arranged. A motio nof sympathy was carried with Mr F. Spittle in the recent death of his sister.
