CONTEST WON BY WELLINGTON (United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, February 5. By winning the first three races the Wellington crew has won the Idlealong Sailing Championship for 1941. The second and third races were decided at Lyttelton today, Wellington winning the morning race after a close contest with Canterbury and winning the afternoon race easily. Members of the winning crew are C. Stutter (skipper), H. G. Stutter and E. Gibson. Canterbury and Nelson were the two crews which showed the next best performance. This morning’s race was over a triangular course and was started at 10.30 a.m. in a light southerly wind. Crews of two were carried. At the end of the first round Canterbury led Nelson by 2min Isec, with Wellington 7sec behind Nelson. Wellington did well on the beat in the second round and rounded the mark 55sec ahead of Canterbury who had the same margin over Nelson. The wind was failing during the last round but Wellington increased its lead on the run and, the result was:- - ' Wellington—lhr llmin 55sec 1 Nelson—lhr 12min 15sec 2 Canterbury—lhr 12min 20sec 3 West land—lhr 18min 4 Marlborough—lhr 21min 20sec 5 The afternoon race was started at 3 p.m. in a light southerly wind over a windward and leeward course. On the run Wellington soon showed superior sailing and West Coast also put in a good burst. Wellington rounded the mark first, Imin 40sec ahead of Canterbury, followed closely by West Coast and Nelson. Marlborough retired without completing the round. A failing wind made the beat very siow and at this stage the West Coast skipper decided to withdraw, having fouled a buoy at the start of the race. Wellington now had a big lead and finished the second round five minutes ahead of Canterbury with Nelson another five minutes later. The wind freshened again for the final round, but Wellington now had a commanding lead and the finish was:— Wellington—shr lOmin 30sec 1 Canterbury—shr 18min 55sec 2 Nelson—shr 19min 25scc 3
