Shell Fired Across Bows

! The fact was forcibly brought home ! to three Auckland school boys that they were breaking port regulations when the shore battery at North Head fired a shell across the bows of the 12ft sailing boat in which they were returning to Auckland from a holiday at Brown's Bay about midday last Saturday (says The Auckland Star). At the time the boys, -whose ages ranged from 13 to 16 years, were sailing up the Rangitoto Channel and passing the examination boat. Realizing the shot had been fired as a warning, the boys reported to the examination vessel and explained that they had been told by the port authority that it would not be necessary for them to report. Their names were taken, and they were informed that they would have to pay £2/10/- for the cost of the shell, after which thev were allowed to proceed, doubtless the wiser for the experience.
