AUSTRALIAN TURF REVIEW

BEAU PERE NOW IN AMERICA By SIR MODRED Winner of the principal race for stayers in Sydney last week Climax is a four-year-old mare by the English horse Excitement by Hurry On. A daughter of Magpie, the winner's dam. Miss Jean, traces back to Anna Carlovna, a very smart New Zealand mare of the St. Aubin’s Stud. The well-known New South Wales sportsman Mi, E. J. Watt, a New Zealander by birth, won a race in Sydney on Saturday with Winifred (4yrs). A successful juvenile last season the winner is by Harinero (by Blandford) from Miss Manfred, by Manfred (son of Heroic) from a mare with strains of Carbine blood through Cyklon and Pistol, two imported English sires. Exported to the United States from New South Wales the juvenile filly Beau Cadeau cost 525 guineas at Trentham as a yearling. She was sent overseas by her purchaser Mr W. J. Smith, of the St. Aumurn’s Stud. Winner of two races in Melbourne during the holiday season the four-year-old gelding Deliberate is a New Zealand-bred galloper. His successes were gained over five and six furlongs, and it was noticeable that he carried heavy weights really well. A son of Bulandshar his dam was Royst, by Warplane (a beautifully bred son of Martian from a mare of Charlemagne IIMultiform line) from Rapture, by Kilbroney from Ambrosian, by St. Ambrose from Neva (dam of Danube), by Stepniak from Whirlpool, a mare of the well-known Mermaid maternal family. Deliberate was a cast-off from Mr W. R. Kemball’s Melbourne string. GREAT STUD CAREER With a remarkable stud career behind him in New Zealand the English horse Beau Pere (Son-in-Law-Cinna) has reached a new home in California. He is on loan to Mr L. B. Mayer from Mr Smith, of the St. Aubin’s Stud, at Scone, New South Wales. Mr Smith's sire, who was purchased in New Zealand at 3300 guineas, has been lent to America in the hope of opening up a market in that country for Australian thoroughbreds, a venture that would undoubtedly redound in due course to the benefit of New Zealand breeders. He is not the first sire from tins country to reach California, as many years ago Mr J. B. Haggin secured several New Zealand-bred horses, including Sir Modred, Maxim. July and Idulium for service in the United States. Sir Modred and Maxim proved very successful in the United States and their names still crop up in the tabulated pedigrees of winners in that country. Idalium (a brother to Sir Modred) won his last races in New Zealand when he accounted for a double at a meeting promoted by the Winton Jockey Club, successes for which he was prepared by T. (“Tot”) White, an uncle of the successful Wingatui owner-trainer Mr J. A. White. One of Idalium’s winning progeny in the Dominion was a useful mare called Rondenella, who scored frequently in Otago and Southland. Australian studmasters are keenly alive to the fact that, all going well, when a state of war no longer prevails, there will be a keen demand in England for mares of the best families eligible for the English Stud Book and that these will be sought in America, Australia, and England. There has been a record drain on the fillies and mares of the Old Country during the past two years and they will have to be replaced. There are many mares and their fillies in the Dominion likely to be eagerly sought after, both importations and New Zealand-bred stock. At late sales of 1940 at Newmarket no fewer - than 11 English mares were purchased for New Zealand, and many more for Australia.
