ANNUAL SPORTS AT WAIKAKA

MAIN RUNNING EVENT WON BY K. LAIDLAW BARTLETT’S SUCCESS IN DISTANCE RACES Close finishes were the order of the day at the twenty-first annual sports meeting of the Waikaka and Combined I Districts’ Athletic Society, held on the I recreation grounds, Waikaka, on Satur- ; day afternoon. The weather was ideal i and there was a big crowd ->f spectators I present. The entries in all events were good and the keen competition made the meeting a most successful one. The gate receipts totalled £32, this being an improvement on last year’s figures. The main running event of the day, the 135 yards Waikaka handicap, was won by K. Laidlaw (Invercargill). Laidlaw has been displaying consistent form this season and has had several successes. He started off the seven yards mark on Saturday in the nair. sprint and beat A. McPherson, the scratch man who was giving him half a yard, by inches. Laidlaw was also placed in his heat in the 75 yards sprint, but he was not in the first three in the final. A feature of the running events was tiie excellent performance of J. W. Bartlett, who won the mile and half mile events. Bartlett is another runner who has been showing great form this season and his wins on Saturday were thoroughly deserved. He zas scratch man in the mile event and he ran a good race to win by a yard from one of the limit men, R. H. Dickson. The BSO yards event provided a good finish, Bartlett getting the decision by a yard from W. Rees, who won the mile and half-mile events at the Mataura sports recently, after a hard dash home. A young runner who showed considerable promise was H. Dillon (Riversdale), who won the short sprint and the 440 yards events off f: irly good marks. Several youths’ races young women’s races, married women’s races and races for boys and girls were also held during the afternoon. The field events also drew good fields and there was some good competition. Clay bird shoots were also held.

A high standard of performance was given in the dancing events. The entries were good in all events and competition was keen. Entries were limited in the pipi'g events but the competitors gave good performances. The meeting was conducted in an efficient manner but because of a late start the meeting was late in finishing. Mr E. Maslin was president and Mr E. Gutschlag was secretary. Results:—
