Shortage Of Maternity Nurses
“There is a shortage of 200 maternity nurses in New Zealand and the Health Department does not wish any nurse to go out of practice over some minor matter,” said the secretary (Mr A. M. Williams) at the meeting of the Southland Hospital Board yesterday, when it was reported that the resignation of Miss H. E. Allen, lessee of the maternity hospital at Riverton, had been received. Mr Williams added that the Health Department had a very good opinion of Miss Allen. It would be difficult to get anyone to replace her. Because of the shortage of nurses the department was not in favour of a maternity nurse transferring from elsewhere as this would simply create a shortage in another place. It was decided that the secretary should interview Miss Allen.
