The engagement is announced of Margaret Evelyn, elder daughter of Mr and Mrs J. N. McKinlay, 88 Pomona street, and John Edward, only son of Mr and Mrs W. N. Corbet, 45 Arthur street, Wellesley. Mr and Mrs G. W. Hayden, Yarrow street, returned from the north on Saturday. Mr and Mrs John Thomson, Grace street, have left to spend a holiday in Queenstown.

Mrs J. Cassels, Invercargill, is the guest of her sister, Mrs N. Philp, Riverton.

Mrs H. G. Lawrence, Dunedin, arrived last night to stay with her mother, Mrs E. V. McKeever, Pomona street.

Miss Doreen Walker, who has been the guest of Mrs W M. Walker, Lorn street, has returned to Christchurch. Miss M Worthy, of the New Zealand Railways staff, Auckland, is the guest of Mrs W. M. Walker, Lorn street. Mrs L. J. Thomas and her daughter, Alison, Louisa street, loft yesterday to spend a holiday at Te Anau.

Mr and Mrs L. F. Moller, Avenal Flats, returned yesterday from a holiday spent in Dunedin.

Miss Linda Macdonald, Louisa street, vho has been spending three weeks’ loliday in Hamilton, returned home zesterday.

Mrs B. Johnston, North Auckland, /ho has been paying an extended visit o her sister, Mrs R. A. de Latour, Gala

street, will leave for Christchurch this morning, accompanied by Mrs de Latour.

Miss Mollie Scott, Oamaru, who is visiting Stewart Island, will arrive in Invercargill at the end of the week. She will pay a brief visit to Mrs P. Linton Hodge, Gladstone Terrace, before returning north. Mrs David Hopcroft and Mrs A. B. Hopcroft and their families, Gummies Bush, have returned from the Rocks. Their guest, Mrs Graham Lindsay, Waianiwa, returned home earlier in the week. Mrs G. L. McNaught, whose husband, Lieutenant-Colonel McNaught, is with the New Zealand Forces in England, has returned to Lower Hutt, after spending a month with her mother, Mrs John McQueen.

WALKER—BUTTERFIEI ,D At St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Invercargill, the wedding took place of Alice Joyce, only daughter of Mr and Mrs H. Butterfield, Marine Parade, Bluff, and John Crawford, second son of Mr and Mrs J. Walker, Shannon street, Bluff. The officiating minister was the Rev. J. Willoughby, and Mr Lomas was the organist. The bride, who was escorted by her brother, Mr B. Butterfield, wore a slimfitting gown of cobweb lace over satin, the back falling into a train. Her veil of embroidered silk tulle, worn over the face, was held in place by a halo of pearls. She carried a sheaf of regal lilies and maidenhair fern. Miss Muriel Frisby and Miss Betty Bradshaw, the bridesmaids, wore twin frocks of lemon silk taffetas. They also wore halos of flowers and carried bouquets of cream and lemon roses. Before leaving the church the bride was presented with a gold horseshoe by Margaret and Betty Crawford, and with a cream horseshoe by Faye Robertson. Mr J. A. Walker and Mr C. Walker, orothers of the bridegroom, were best man and groomsman. A solo was sung by Mr Frank Johnson. At the reception, which was held in the Tudor Lounge, the guests were received by Mrs Butterfield and Mrs G. Crawford, aunt of the bridegroom. Mrs Butterfield wore a navy georgette coat over a navy floral frock, with a shoulder spray of cream roses, and Mrs Crawford wore a brown striped sheer frock and a matching shoulder spray. For travelling the bride chose a model frock of navy, with coat, hat, and accessories to match. WATSON—PATERSON The wedding took place at the Winton Presbyterian Church recently of Dorothy Grace, second daughter of Mr and Mrs T. E. Paterson, Longfield, and

James Gordon, elder son of Mr and Mrs J. M. Watson, Mitchell street, Invercargill. The Rev R. G. McKenzie performed the ceremony and Miss Gilmour played the organ. During the signing of the register Mr W. Henderson sang. The church was decorated in bridal colours by Mrs T. N. Eastlake.

The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a model trained gown of embossed ivory chiffon fashioned in princess style. Her ivory veil, which was worn over the face on entering the church, was surmounted by a halo of orange blossom and lilies. She wore ivory satin shoes and silk embroidered stockings which were worn by her

mother on her wedding day 30 years ago. She carried a sheaf of Regalia lilies and maidenhair fern.

The bridesmaids were Misses Rowena Watson, sister of the bridegroom, and Jean Paterson sister of the bride. They wore twin frocks of blue sprigged georgette, over satin. Their halos were of tiny pink rose bands. They carried shower bouquets of roses, carnations, abutillions and maidenhair fern.

Mr T. H. Paterson, brother of the bride, was best man and Mr - J. Clarke, cousin of the bridegroom, was groomsman. Messrs R. Watson and G. Paterson were ushers. On leaving the church the bride was presented with a silver horseshoe by

her small nephew, Jim Paterson. The guests adjourned to the Masonic Hall where they were received by Mrs T. E. Paterson assisted by Mrs J. M. Watson.

For travelling th. bride chose a. suit of wool georgette of spring lilac with a summer felt hat of the same colour. Her accessories v. ere navy and she carried a blue and spring lilac checked Harris tweed coat.

Items were sung at the breakfast by Messrs A. and W. Henderson, and Mrs D. McNaughton, who also played the accompaniments. Before her marriage the bride was the guest of honour at a gift evening given by the residents of Hokonui and

presentations were made to her by the • Browns P.W.M.U., Hokonui Sunday school pupils, Otapiri Junior Homemakers’ Club and Hokonui W.D.F.U. Mr and Mrs J. G. Watson have now taken up residence in George street, Otautau. HAWKES—SOMERVILLE The wedding took place recently at the Presbyterian Church, Nightcaps, of Betty, elder daughter of Mr and Mrs W. Somerville, Nightcaps, and Stuart i Douglas, eldest son of Mr and Mrs C. iJ. Hawkes, Underwood. The Rev. W. ’ Bartie performed the ceremony and I Mrs A. Kennedy played the wedding music. The church was decorated with

Iceland poppies by friends of the bride.

The bride, who was given _ away by her father, wore a white satin trained gown. She also wore a string of pearls, the gift of the bridegroom. The embroidered veil was arranged with a coronet of orange blossom and she carried a sheaf of arum lilies and maidenhair fern. On leaving the church the bride was presented with a silver horseshoe by her cousin. Miss Heather Dickson. The bride’s sister, Miss Dorothea Somerville, was bridesmaid. She wore a frock of pale green georgette over satin, with a head-band of green georgette. She carried a bouquet of cream roses and asparagus fern.

Miss Noela Dockerty was flower girl. She wore a frock of pale pink georgette over satin and carried a posy of pinks. Mr John Hawkes, brother of the bridegroom, was best man The reception was held at the home of the bride’s parents, where the bride’s mother, Mrs W. Somerville, assisted by the bridegroom’s mother, Mrs C. J. Hawke’s, received the guests. For travelling the bride wore a navy frock and clover coat. Mr and Mrs S. D. Hawkes will live in Nightcaps.
