DOMINION BOWLS TITLES

Pair From Northend Eliminated ONLY FIVE PAIRS LEFT TO CARRY ON (United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, January 12. Only five pairs were left to carry on yesterday at the end of the day’s postI sectional play in the New Zealand bowling championships. They were the survivors of 80 pairs who set out in the morning to strive for the title. Large crowds gathered at the five greens in use and watched first-class bowling in ideal conditions. With the greens fast and drawing well interest was added to the games by the fact that five of the pairs in the third game represented local clubs. At the end of the day’s play there were only five pairs left in: Williamson and Joseph (Canterbury), Piper and Hadwin (Hutt), Littlejohn and Calder (Phoenix), Maslin and Squire (Hawera) and Jury and McClymont (Ponsonby).

Hadwin will meet Joseph, the winner playing Calder, while McClymont will play Squire. Three of the sections had byes in the first round, which meant that the sections won by Hadwin and Joseph have played only four rounds whereas the other three, including the bye in the first round, have completed five. Hadwin and Joseph will meet in .the fifth round, the winner coming into the semi-final to play Calder.

Onehunga survived its second game rand Canterbury (Williamson and Joseph) had their second win to eliminate Blenheim (A. Nicholas and Mitchell), 25-15. On the St. Albans green Hey’s Opawa pair was eliminated by Northend, Invercargill (Hewitt and Hay) and McClymont’s Ponsonby pair had a second win.

At the Barrington green Hampton and Chambers (Sumner) put out Marriott and Turland (Opawa), 20-16, and Maslin and Squire (Hawera) and McNish’s, Canterbury, pair both had wins. The second Canterbury pair (Munn’s) also survived but the third (Turpin’s) was eliminated, 19-12, by Hutt (Hadwin).

FIELD NARROWED ' The field narrowed sharply after the j third game. Joseph’s Canterbury pair accounted for Nelson (Rout and John), 22-14, and Morrison’s, Cashmere, pair was unlucky not to eliminate Onehunga being beaten 23-22. After a close game all the way McClymont went on for another win eliminating I Hay’s Northend pair 22-16 and E!m--!wood (Featherston) eliminated MarI tella’s Nelson pair. There was another close game at the Barrington green in which Lee and Kebby (Timaru) beat the Sumner pair, 23-22. Canterbury (McNish) went to pieces after playing good, steady bowls and were eliminated by Hawera. The other Canterbury pair, skipped by Munn, also could not last the pace and were beaten, 18-13 by Campbell’s Geraldine pair. With all the singles finalists elimin- i ated in the pairs, it was possible to; make a start yesterday with the final games in the singles section. '

J. R. Smith (Elmwood), the only twolifer, met W. A. Hill (Balmoral), E. J. Cooke (Elmwood) played C. H. Kettle (Nelson), C. Spearman (R.S.A.) met A. Dey (Christchurch) and J. Veitch (Dunedin) had a bye. The games were held on the St. Alban’s green.

I REMARKABLE SCORING RUN i Spearman trounced Dey 18-7, giving I a fine display of accurate bowling. Dey | opened out and was standing 5-2 at the | sixth head. Spearman was 4up on I the next and then started a remarkable j scoring run, which allowed Dey to secure only two more points, singles on the eighth and fourteenth heads, j while his opponent’s score mounted in i singles and twos. Dey retired at the I nineteenth head. I Fortunes varied in the game between [ Cooke and Kettle, Cooke finally going | down, 17-13. Cooke had established a 6-point lead after six heads. The scores were 9-8 in Kettle’s favour at the twelfth. Three to Kettle on the eighteenth put him safely ahead at 16-11, and his opponent, though he scored on the closing heads, could not bridge the gap. Smith and Hill provided a superb display of accurate drawing, with the result of the game in doubt until the final head, Smith finally winning 17-14. At the seventh head Smith was lying 9-2, having taken a good three on the third head. Hill started to score with a three on the ninth head and had passed his opponent, 10-9, at the thirteenth. From then on till the nineteenth head there was never more than a point between them as they exchanged | heads for singles and twos. The nineteenth head was critical for Hill, who was lying the shot until Smith drew to displace the shot bowl and lie two up. Smith added singles on the final two | heads for the game to finish 17-14 in his favour.

SMITH’S FIRST DEFEAT Smith went on to play Spearman, and Kettle met Veitch in the semi-final. It was just as well that Smith was a two lifer, for he had his first defeat from Spearman, 20-15. Pulling up after appearing to be in a hopeless position, Spearman’s driving was a big factor in his success. There was little between the players in their drawing, although Smith was shaky at the start and took time to settle down. He made a bad mistake early in the game when he drove his own shot out and left Spearman four up. There was no doubt that the better player on the day won. Smith survives, however, and in the second semi-final Spearman will have a bye. The bye did not suit Veitch for he I went down 19-15 to Kettle in their semi-final game. Veitch could not get going and lagged badly all the way. Near the end he tried driving, but this did not affect the position and Kettle kept drawing consistently to take the game. Detailed results of the games are:— SINGLES First Round.—C. Spearman (R.S.A., Christchurch) 16 beat A. Dey (Christchurch) 7; C. H. Kettle (Nelson) 17 beat A. E. Cooke (Elmwood) 13; J. R.
