THE CALEDONIAN GAMES

■ MEETING MARRED BY WEATHER Small Crowd Sees Good Contests MCPHERSON’S WIN IN SHEFFIELD ! Bad weather once again marred the Caledonian Society’s annual sports 1 gathering which was held at the show grounds on Saturday in wind and fain. The attendance was well below ] what could reasonably have been ex--1 | pectcd on a fine day. Thc gate tak- ! ings were only £lB.l and the attendance was nearly 2000. The society needed a I good attendance to make up for its losses I on previous meetings and this reverse I on Saturday is a serious one for it. Thc 1 I directors may consider whether any more Caledonian Garries should be held, at least for the duration of Ihe war. From all other points, however, the games were successful. Thc number of entries was a record fox’ circuit, sports meetings. The crowd saw some thrilling I finishes, as the handicapping, particularly in the bushcraft section, was very good. Tire bushcraft section attracted much interest. The cyclists, both amateur and professional, also gave some I excellent displays and had the crowd on its feet on several occasions. Thc j track was in excellent order at the i start of the afternoon, but towards thc I end of the day it became a little , greasy. . I The main professional running event ; of the day, the Sheffield Handicap, was j a close race. It was run in five heats l with two semi-finals and went to A. | McPherson by the narrow margin of a i foot. R. Thomson ran into second place I and the young Invercargill professional j K. Laidlaw, who enjoyed considerable | success in amateur ranks last year, was third. The heats were run off in good . time and the final was also fast. Me- ! Pherson well deserved his win. Laidlaw won the 75 yards event in good time. F. N. Newman won thc 220 yards m I good style from Thomson and Kingston. Newman has enjoyed success at Southland circuit meetings in previous j years. Thc amateur runners also pertormect well. H. Bennie made a name for himself by winning the 440 yards. He certaiuly was on a good handicap, but he i ran well. The mile was covered, in good | i style by J. J. Shand. J. Metcalfe, who i i has long been known in amateur, ranks , in the citv, ran second. H. Bennie was , again to the fore in thc amateur 100 > I yards, in which he ran second to N. I Prentice. Thc race was run in 10 l-ssec. ] GOOD PERFORMANCES The bushcraft men, were well worth j watching. Their perffll’mances were of < I the highest standard and the crowd ; I certainly appreciated their eliorts. I I Among the axemen and sawyers were | I some of the country’s best, including a ; ; team of champions from the West | i Coast. The main event of the day, thc , | 14-inch underhand chop, drew 48 en- i | tries and the finishes in the heats were I | close. Thc event was won by Charles I I Neame. who is already well known for ; his chopping performances in the province. The final was chopped in faster time than any of the heats. The veteran axeman, John Pont, won his heat I with a brilliant showing to record the fastest heat time. His performance wa.s enthusiastically received by the crowd. 1 The 12-inch standing block chop was another good event. This was won by the? ■well-known <ixein<ui J, .Ic Au fioni Cliff Neame and the West Coast I chopper, Eddie Nolari The sawing events provided the i closest finishes of the day. several pairs finishing within the space of a second so that judging was difficult. C. Waddick and A. Waddick gave | splendid cycling performances. They I; were first and second respectively in thc mile cvcle race for amateurs. W. ; Hain, an Otago rider, won the two miles j in good style, with L. Johnson and H j Huhber, Invercargill men, in second | ( and third places. , The professional cyclists performances were also of a high standaid Because of the rain the dancing had to be finished in the Drill Hall and thc afternoon lost some of its national colour. Piping, clay bird shooting, field events and wrestling completed an attractive programme. The John Macdonald Cup, fol’ the j . most points in national dancing was won by Miss Norma Marshall, of Dunedin with 19 points. Miss Mavis Leabody and Miss B. Smith, both of Invercargill, were second and third with 14 points and 13 points respectively. A grand parade of past and present athletes was held during the afternoon. It was an impressive sight as the athletes lined up before the grandstand to j salute thc Union Jack. Thc results were as follows:—
