ENGLAND’S PUBLIC SCHOOLS

“SHOULD BE OPEN TO ALL CLASSES” (British Official Wireless) RUGBY, January 10. Mr P. H. B. Lyon, head master of Rugby, speaking at the Archbishop of York’s conference, said that profiteers who were products of the last war had immediately sent their sons to public schools and once these sons were inside they were anxious to shut the gates against those clamouring outside. If this happened again, it would be a disaster, but he said he was pretty certain it would not happen again. “There is a curious idea that the public school head master will fight tooth and nail against the extension of privileges to other classes,” Mr Lyon continued. “It is no more fun to teach the stupid child of the rich man than to teach the clever child of the poor man. We want to offer what we have to those who will make the best use of it in the end and to make what we give as good as possible. Public schools should long ago have welcomed members of every class in England.”
