NEW ASSISTANT AT HIGH SCHOOL ADVICE RECEIVED BY COMMITTEE At the final committee meeting of the Wyndham District High School for 1940 the following members were present: Messrs W. F. Bennetto (chairman), D. N. A. Macpherson (secretary), A. A. Wilson, W. Thompson, C. Bain, M. McFadyen and J. Young. The

rector, Mr A. N. Macdonald, was also in attendance.

The Southland Education Board advised that Miss I. E. Patterson had been appointed extra probationary assistant at the school and would begin duty on February 3. The secretary submitted a statement showing the low state of the school’s finances and he was directed to make application to the Citizens’ Committee for a grant of £l5. The rector reported that the primary roll stood at 113 against 108 at the beginning of the term. There had been ! two admissions and one withdrawal. The granting of the assistant would put the school on a much better footing and enable him to handle matters much better. In the secondary department the roll stood at 14, one of whom had sat for the matriculation examination and four for public service examinations. The health of the children was excellent. The rector said he was going into the question of having the school gardens reorganized and would probably require several loads of soil for this purpose. It was decided to hold the school excursion to Colac Bay on Wednesday, February 5, and the secretary was instructed to make the necessary arrangements with the Railway Department. The chairman extended seasonal greetings to members of the staff and the members of the committee. FANCY DRESS PARTY The teachers of the Wyndham Presbyterian Sunday school entertained the pupils and their parents at a fancy dress party. The Sunday school hall had been decorated with coloured streamers, bright lampshades and bowls of lupins. A heavily-laden Christmas tree occupied a prominent place on the platform. The first part of the evening was devoted to games and concert items. Recitations were given by Dorothy McKenzie and Dorothy McDonald, a tap dance by Beverley McNaughton, and a quartette by Florrie, Audrey and Melva McCaughan and Isabel Mitchell. Several community sings were held by the children. A treasure hunt was won by Isabel Mitchell. Messrs E. S. i

Macfarlanc and D. Hunter were accompanists.

The prizes for the best fancy costumes were as follows:—Girls, six and under, Beverley Milne; boys, six and under, Neil McKay; girls, over six, Gwen McDonald; boys, over six, Bill McKinnon; most original costume, Noela McCaughan.

A grand parade followed the presentation of the prizes, the winners leading the parade. Supper was then served, aftei- which the arrival of Santa Claus was announced. Each child was handed a gift from the tree. Mr Lance Crump, superintendent, thanked the teachers, parents, and all others who had combined to make the evening a success, making special reference to two of the teachers, Misses F. Johnson and M. Crosbie, who had initiated the idea of the fancy dress party.
