TISBURY
ACCOMMODATION AT SCHOOL
POSITION DISCUSSED BY COMMITTEE Reference to the acute position of the accommodation at the school was made by the chairman (Mr L. Gilson) at the meeting of the Tisbury School Committee. During the past year, he said, the roll had increased greatly and at present the children were crowded into the small classrooms and porches. The school building was of fairly old design and the rooms were not large, while the lighting in one room was poor. The fact that it had been found necessary to use the porches to accommodate the children was in itself sufficient reason for hastening the building of the extra room required, said Mr Gilson, but in addition the drawbacks to the pupils and the inconvenience caused to the staff by the cramped area was another point of great importance. Tlie committee decided that as the extra space would be definitely required for the beginning of the next school year the Southland Education Board should be approached with a view to getting at least temporary accommodation in the Sunday School hall.
The head master reported that the school roll stood at 62 boys and 72 girls, a total of 134, A visit had been paid by Mr K. I. Robertson, agricultural inspector, who gave an interesting talk on pasture grasses and insects. It was decided to hold the school picnic at Riverton on February 15, 1941. This being the last meeting of the year, the head master on behalf of the staff, expressed seasonal greetings and spoke of the cordial relations that existed between the staff and the committee. The chairman responded. Those present were: Messrs L. Gilson (chairman), C. Purdue, F. Evans, W. Shepherd, D. Cameron, E. W. Lawrence and the head teacher (Mr A. Kinross).
