STREET LIGHTS IN ROSEDALE

COUNCIL CONSIDERING INSTALLATION The application by the ratepayers of the Rosedale district for a number of street lights to be installed is still under consideration by the Southland County Council. A recommendation from the engineer (Mr G. R. Milward) that no new lights be installed, because houses were very scattered in the area, was considered by the council at its meeting yesterday. Cr A. S. McNaught supported the engineer’s recommendation. Other councillors said that further consideration should be given to the request, since although the population was scattered there were a number of shift workers, particularly women, who had to go through the district at night. It was felt that they were entitled to the protection the lights would offer. It was then decided that the riding member (Cr McNaught), the engineer and the county clerk (Mr H. C. Gimblett) should inspect the locality and report back to the council.
