BUILDING ACTIVITY MAINTAINED
FIGURES FOR OCTOBER War conditions have not greatly affected building activity in Invercargill. This was indicated by the fact that the value of permits issued by the city engineer’s office during October was more than £4OOO greater than the total for the same month of last year. Building valued at £10,921/10/- was authorized during the month. The total for October last yeax - was, however, the smallest for any month for two years. The figures for new dwellings, seven costing £8425, although much smaller than for the previous two months, are quite good when compared with the totals for the earlier months of the year. Another large item was for alterations to business premises, an expenditure of £1444/15/- for alterations to 19 premises being authorized. Eight dwellings are to be altered at a cost of £B3l/15/-. Following are the details of the permits for last month: —
