MATAURA-CLINTON ROAD
COMPLETION DISCUSSED BY COUNTY COUNCIL Tire responsibility for forming and metalling the uncompleted section of the Mataura-Clinton road was the subject of a letter which was received by the Southland County Council from the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple) yesterday. The Minister said that he saw no reason why the original agreement whereby the council undertook to complete the road should not be honoured. He looked to the council to complete the whole of the road on a £2 for £1 subsidy. He regarded the matter as one which should be governed by the council as a whole rather titan by delegating it to the individual riding member. In view of the war and the necessity for conserving public works expenditure until conditions become more favourable, there would be
no objection to having the work deferred for the present. As soon as conditions improved the council would be expected to complete the road as agreed. Cr F. F. Trapski, the riding member, said that he would be agreeable to. having the work done when conditions became more favourable. The chairman (Cr W. M. Norman) said that promises had been given at a meeting of settlers and others interested at Mataura, and all the promises made had been kept, including the building of the Mataura bridge. He thought it was a pity that Cr Trapski would not agree to have work on the road started immediately.
