LONDON VICTIMS OF AIR RAIDS

SOUTHLAND FUND NOW £2350 £lOO GIVEN BY COUNTY COUNCIL The response to the appeal for the relief of distress in London caused by German air raids continues to be good, £216/15/11 being subscribed in Southland yesterday. The total amount collected is now £2350/17/2. The Southland County Council decided to give £lOO to the Southland fund at its meeting yesterday. It also decided to give £lO to the fund established for the same purpose by the New Zealand Counties’ Association. “The German air ‘blitzkrieg’ daily leaves behind it a trail of desolation, stated a letter from the president of the Counties’ Association (Mr C. J. Talbot). “Hundreds of homes have been devastated and hundreds of families are in urgent need of help. To me, the present seems an opportune time to launch an appeal among the county councils to make a mass contribution to assist in the alleviation of distress throughout our Motherland.” • If all county councils gave £lO to the fund, £l2OO would be collected to help the people of Great Britain, thus showing tangible appreciation of centuries-old “British pluck,” which was still a predominant feature of the spirit of the people in a time of national crisis. A summary of the contributions received to date is as follows: —
