Seven German And Two Italian
TWO SHIPS SUNK BY BRITISH SUBMARINE (United Press Association—Telegraph Copyright) (Received October 4, 11.30 p.m.) LONDON, October 4. Seven German submarines and two Italian submarines have been sunk during the past few days, according to an Admiralty communique. Attacks by U-boats on merchant shipping have been more successful recently than in the earlier stages of the war. This was to be expected after the collapse of France, when the Germans were able to use French ports as submarine bases. The public cannot expect news of the sinking of a U-boat immediately it occurs, for this would give valuable information to the enemy. Therefore it must not be assumed that because there are no reports of such sinkings Britain is having no success against the submarines. On September 22 the British submarine Osiris sank an Italian destroyer in the Adriatic. Previously the Osiris had sunk an Italian supply ship. German long range guns on the French coast shelled a British convoy in the English Channel today, but soon desisted when they saw that their efforts were not meeting with success.
