TENNIS CLUB OPENS SEASON EXCELSIOR MEMBERS ELECT OFFICERS There was an attendance of over 40 members and visitors on the Excelsioi tennis courts at Tuatapere on opening day A mixed doubles tournament was held, 30 players, including members of the Te Tua, Papatotara and Tuatapere Clubs taking Partwinners were Mrs Dewe (Papatotara) and P. Knowler (Te Tua). Afternoon tea was provided by the members ot the club. Results of the various games were:— First Round: Miss Lopdell and H. Bennett beat Miss J. Young and E. Gorton; Mrs Dewe and P. Knowler beat Miss N. Corkery and I. Young; Miss E. King and P. Corkery beat Miss M. Te Au and D. Magee; Miss M. Bennett and C. Knowler beat Miss B. McLeod and J. A. Forde; Miss W. Hannan and E. Gorton beat Mrs Laurie ana C. Kidd; Miss J. Davies and J. Denniston beat Mrs Amos and F. Ward; Miss I. Knowler and D. Ward beat Mrs Frameton and G. Nicholls. Second Round: Mrs Templeton and I. Young beat Miss R. Lopdell and H. Bennett; Mrs Dewe and P. Knowler beat Miss E. King and P. Corkery; Miss M. Bennett and C. Knowler beat Miss W. Hannan and E. Gorton; Miss I. Knowler and D. Ward beat Miss J. Davies and J. Denniston. Semi-finals: Mrs Dewe and P. Knowler beat Mrs Templeton and 1. Young; Miss M. Bennett and C. Knowler beat Miss I. Knowler and D Ward. Final: Mrs Dewe and P. Knowler beat Miss M. Bennett and C. Knowler. GIRL GUIDES The annual meeting, of the Tuatapere Girl Guides committee was held recently at the residence of Mrs W. Low. The annual report stated that the committee and Guides had had a most successful year. The committee wished to thank all those who had helped and also the parents for their interest in

the work during the year. The bal-ance-sheet showed a satisfactory credit balance.

The election of officers resulted: President, Mrs D. McLeod; vice-presidents, Mesdames F. Harrison and H. Whitehead; secretary and treasurer, Mrs J. Tuffery; committee, Mesdames I. B. Gordon, B. Brookes, A. D. McClymont, J. Mclntyre and G. E. Higgins. Mrs Harrison, the retiring president, thanked all the members for their cooperation during the year and also Mrs Low, captain, and Misses N. Charlton and P. Whitehead, the lieutenants. CARD EVENING There was a fair attendance at a cribbage evening for Southland Red Cross Society emergency depot funds arranged by the local branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association and held in McLeod’s rooms Representatives of east and west areas of the township took part and the West team won by the close margin of one game. A sum of about £2 will result from the evening. _____
