SOUTHLAND TEAMS BOTH BEATEN (Special to The Times) DUNEDIN, September 22. The senior and junior Southland representative hockey teams were defeated by Otago yesterday. The senior game was won by Otago by four goals to three and the junior by six goals to four. The grounds at the Oval were in excellent order and play in both matches was fast.

The senior game was marked by the clever forward play of Otago and the dogged persistence with which Southland staved off score after score. Southland did not show the same finish as Otago, and long passing was frequent, which proved tiring. The scoring was opened by White, centre-half. Before long Southland evened with a neat shot by D. Davidson. Otago again took the lead when a passing movement was finished off by Alldred, and shortly after Yule scored after some combined work. Southland missed a couple of chances of scoring before half-time.

There was less incident in the second half. T. Hennessey added to Southland’s score and B. O. Ryburn to Otago’s. The Southland players were tiring, but neither side was playing well and the game was nearing an end when Southland’s last score-was registered by H. P. Semmens. The game ended: Otago 4, Southland 3. Messrs J. D. Gregg (Southland) and H. Sew Hoy were the umpires. Southland held the lead for a long period in the junior match but in the second half Otago improved to win by six goals to four.
