OBITUARY

PROFESSOR SELIGMAN LONDON, September 20. The death has occurred of Professor Charles Gabriel Seligman, aged 67 years. Professor Seligman was Emeritus Professor of Ethnology at the University of London. He was a member of several anthropological expeditions to the Torres Straits, Borneo, New Guinea and Africa and was the author of a number of technical works. SIR DENISON ROSS LONDON, September 20. The death is announced of Sir Edward Denison Ross, aged 69 years. Sir Denison Ross was an eminent authority on Asiatic and Oriental studies, and from 1916 to 1937 was Professor of Persian at the University of London.

Sir Denison Ross died on Friday at Istanbul, where for the last few months he had been head of the British Information Bureau. He was greatly esteemed for his work as director for 20 years of the School of Oriental Studies in London University. A remarkable linguist and an enthusiastic orientalist, Dr Ross travelled widely in the East and made many friends. He was reputed to know at least 30 languages and could speak fluently five or six European, as well 'as several Eastern, languages. He occupied the Chair of Persian at London University for several years. REV. DR WALKER IVENS (Received September 22, 6.30 p.m.) LONDON, September 21. The death has occurred of the Rev. Dr Walker Ivens, aged 70, vicar of Warehorne, Kent. He was an authority on the Melanesian languages. He graduated in New Zealand in 1893 and held many appointments in New Zealand and Australia. For several years he was travelling secretary of the Melanesian Mission.
