THE HALE (RIGHT) AND THE A. P. UPSUR (LEFT), two of the 50 United States’ destroyers transferred to Britain in return for the use of bases in the British West Indies. Immediately President Roosevelt announced the transfer the first ships left for Canadian ports, where they were taken over by British crews.
