GOLF SECRETARY’S TROPHY WON BY J. MITCHELL The secretary’s trophy of the Bluff Golf Club was won by J. Mitchell, who beat L. Edwards in the final 3 and 2. An unofficial Stableford competition was played on Saturday and was won by J. H. Doyle, with 15-25-40. J. Mitchell returned the next best card, 15-20-35. Handicaps have been reduced as follows: J. Mitchell 23, J. H. Doyle 29, D. Bruce 18. s WOMEN’S MATCH A women’s stroke competition was won by Mrs Newman with 56-18-38. Mrs Bragg was next with 58-18-40. An eclectic competition was won by Mrs Bragg, 45 for 9 holes. PRESENTATION TO STATIONMASTER Mr L. E. B. Edwards, formerly stationmaster at Bluff, who has retired from the service, was met by representatives of the shipping and mercantile companies at Bluff. Mr E. G. Parsons, Bluff manager of Shaw, Savill and Albion Co., acted as chairman and presented Mr Edwards with a wallet He spoke of the assistance Mr Edwards had always given the shipping at Bluff and the harmonious relations his executive ability had engendered. Other speakers were Messrs N. W. McGorlick (Ocean Beach Freezing Works), J. M. Hamilton (Port and Blue Star Shipping Lines). James Hamilton (Southland Stevedoring Company), A. J. Riley (John Mill and Co.), E. J. Moon (Union Steam Ship Co., and N.Z. Shipping Co.), C. Hannan (Stewart Island Canneries), A. Mathieson (Southland Cool Stores), Brian Tapley (H. L. Tapley and Co., Ltd.), J. Fletcher (National Mortgage and Agency Co., Ltd.) and Captain A. Rathbone (Wharf Controller). Mr Edwards replied. TENNIS Because of inclement weather the official opening of the Bluff Tennis Club to have been held last Saturday was postponed for a fortnight. RUGBY FOOTBALL / A friendly match between the Bluff and Pirates Rugby Football Clubs was played at Bluff on Saturday, the home team winning by 11 points to 8. At a social gathering afterwards the president of the Bluff Club (Mr J. Burke) thanked the visitors for coming down to play a final game. The coach, Mr A. E. Budd, also spoke. Replies were made by Mr E. Barron, captain of the Pirates team, and the coach, Mr Cockroft. Cornet solos were played by Mr E. Hunter.
