FARMER SHOT DEAD
RESIDENT OF MANANUI (United Press Association) AUCKLAND, September 22. A well-known resident of Mananui, near Taumarunui, Jeremiah O’Sullivan, a married man aged about 50 years, was shot dead about 4.30 o clock this afternoon. A bullet from a .22 calibre rifle entered his right eye. The dead man, who had a family of three children, occupied a cottage on the Taumarunui racecourse property at Mananui. He grazed cows on the property but had received notice from the owners, the Taumarunui Borough Council, to vacate it. O’Sullivan owned a cottage about a quarter of a mile from the racecourse near the domain and with the intention of occupying it himself, had notified the tenant . to vacate his property. O’Sullivan visited his property this afternoon- and while there he met his death.
An inquest will be opened tomorrow. The police have taken O’Sullivan’s tenant, Charles Harold Longley, a married man, aged 39, an invalidity pensioner, into custody in connection with the shooting.
