Cousin Betty’s Letter

My Dear Cousins,

The first prize for the Little Southlander who sold the most tickets for “Toad of Toad Hall” goes to Jean Gardner, and the second to Gwen Nelson. Congratulations to these two cousins who helped m this way to make our play a success. Have you any suggestions for our next activity ? The best one to be sent in so far is a plain and fancy-dress party. This would exclude the country cousins, so, if we do decide to have it, perhaps the country clans could hold small functions among themselves and send the money to me for some patriotic purpose. However, there may be more ideas to come which will be better still. Put on your very-best-extra-special thinking caps and see what happens. There is a new written competition’ set for you this week, and it was suggested to Cousin Betty by a Little Southlander, now grownup, who used to be an enthusiastic member of the page. This big Southlander climbed Sally Staircase as she did many years ago, and spent a long, long time looking at all the back pages filed in the library, discovering as she did so many entries which she herself had written, and for which she had won prizes and marks. That is what you too, may do in a few years time, and you will look at the 1940 Chronicles and be very proud of your work. There is, too, an original drawing competition this week. It was a special request from Cousin Pamela Sinclair, of Dunedin. It is some time since we have had an original drawing for all cousins, and lam sure the competition will appeal to you. As Mole said in “Toad of Toad Hall”—“Does it appeal? Does it appeal to me? Oh my! Oh my! Oh my!” Your loving

Cousin Betty
