READY RESPONSE WITH PARCELS ALL COMMITTEES ACTIVE

The energies of the Women’s Metropolitan Patriotic Committee and the city sub-committees have been concentrated on the task of- packing Southland’s quota of parcels. As each parcel has to be sewn into a cloth bag after being assembled and wrapped, it will be realized that the work of making up a parcel takes some time.

Each sub-committee has sent in to the main depot a number of willing workers and the work progressed quickly and pleasantly. Large supplies of goods and donations of money have been sent in from the country, and members of these committees have advised, the secretary of their willingness to assist in the actual packing. Winners of competitions are:—South Invercargill Borough, supper cloth, Mrs Winter, 444 Elies road south; Bay Road Women’s Patriotic Committee, ornament, Miss Lyons, Bay Road, ticket No. 6822. Sub-committee notes are as follows:— AVENAL-NORTHEND The next meeting of the AvenalNorthend Girls’ Club will be held at the home of Mrs Hitchon, corner of Dee and Louisa street, on Tuesday, September 21. The following donations have been received for Christmas parcels:—Mrs J. Macdonald 10/-, Mrs D. Cuthbertson 10/-, Mrs D. Armour 10/-, Mrs K. H. Allen 10/-, Mrs C. J. Brodrick 30/-, Mrs W. F. Adamson, Rosedale, was a success. The dancing pupils of Madame Thorn entertained those present. The sum of £7/10/- was raised at this function. GLADSTONE The Gladstone Women’s Patriotic Committee desires to thank all who helped in raising funds for Christmas parcels. As the 'other committees have agreed to try this way of collecting, it is to be hoped that this method will receive the approval of the people of the Waikiwi district. . The following knitted articles have been sent in: Seven balaclavas, 10 mittens; 12 scarves and 15 hussifs. The next knitting meeting will be at the home of Mrs George on Tuesday, September 24. < CENTRAL DISTRICT The committee desirgs to thank the ; residents of the Central District for their generous response to the appeal for Christmas parcels for soldiers. The

quota of 50 parcels was completed and an additional donation made to the par- ■ cels fund. ‘ A successful afternoon for the soldiers’ Christmas ' parcels held by Miss Hanan, Leet street, realized £4. A book of knitting instructions and comforts may now be had by next-of-kin from the secretary, Mrs W. A. Brown, 78 Doon street. Competition winners were:—Toy dog (No. 34), Pamela Littlejc'.ri; wool rug, Miss Anne Cameron. EAST INVERCARGILL The committee has procured its full quota of soldiers’ Christmas parcels. Fifty parcels were packed last Monday, and the committee will assist with further packing next Thursday. The following donations for Christmas parcels are acknowledged:—£l each: G.W.C., Mrs M. Buckingham, 1.H.W.; 10/- each, Mrs Mcßumey, Mrs McKenzie, Mrs E. McCallum, Mrs Buddle, Mrs Fraser, Mrs H. W. Norris, Mrs R. Sommerville, Mrs P. A. Bell, Mrs A. Donaldson, Mrs McGoldrick, Mrs Dunlop, M.A.C. Mrs S. Stewart gave eight fruit cakes and five tins of shortbread. GEORGETOWN On Tuesday the women of the Georgetown committee met to pack their quota of Christmas parcels. In the evening a successful concert was held in the Georgetown Hall, when a programme was given by local performers. The sum of £l5 was realized.
