PETROL SHORTAGE AND MAIL CLEARANCES

To The Editor Sir, —I do not own a car, but I have a business friend who cannot get enough petrol for his needs. Another friend who needs a car’ to carry gear back and forward to work cannot get enough petrol and so must walk. Now, sir, there is something wrong somewhere. One day last week the Reserves Department of the City Council used its large motor-truck, with a lawn mower behind, to cut the whole of the reserve from Esk street to Tay street and between Doon street and Elies road. A few days later the tractor pulled a heavy roller all over the same ground. This is only one park; there are the play ground and golf links and possibly more. The motor-truck is going all day and has just again passed my home. It is not so long ago that all this work was done by horse and dray and horse and lawn mower. What I cannot understand is: how can the council get so much petrol to do work that could be done in the old way, while we cannot get our mail collected? I am not an expert and cannot say just .how much petrol the truck and tractor would use in a day, but I can easily imagine they would use enough to collect all mails in our city for a month. Will Mr Denham please explain this?—Yours, etc., JUSTICE. September 20, 1940.
