STOP-BANK AT EYRE CREEK

COUNTY COUNCIL TO PAY THIRD OF COST

A recommendation that the Southland County Council contribute onethird of the estimated cost of £135 of constructing a short stop-bank to prevent flood overflow from Eyre Creek which vzas put forward by the engineer (Mr G. R. Milward) was adopted by the council at its meeting yesterday. It is expected that the work will be put in hand shortly. Flood overflow in the Eyre Creek had again been giving trouble, flood waters having found their way down the west side of the Tarawa Flat, threatening to damage county roads, the railway and the State highway, said Mr Milward. It had been decided that the flood overflow could be prevented by the construction of a short stopbank at the head of the valley where the overflow left the main river. . “Both the district engineer of Railways and the District Public Works Engineer are prepared to recommend their respective departments to contribute one-third share of the cost, and I recommend that this council contribute the remaining third, as the work is highly necessary for the protection of the Eyre Creek road,” said Mr Milward. “The contribution should be made’without prejudice to any further work undertaken regarding the Eyre Creek, as sometime in the future more extensive work will be necessary, if the railway, highway and the farm lands in the valley are to be protected from the results of the gradually rising bed in the stream.”
