PROGRAMME OF WORKS
SOUTHLAND COUNTY COUNCIL CONSTRUCTION OF ROADS AND BRIDGES - / Twenty-two contracts for road and bridge, construction were in force in the Southland county at the beginning of August, stated the report presented by the engineer (Mr G. R. Milward) to the County Council yesterday. Two of these had been completed and passed during the month. The weather was good and satisfactory progress was made with most of the jobs. The gravelled roads generally throughout the county were in good order, stated the report.
In the inner area of the Waihopai riding, general patching work was carried out on Clearwater road, Motu-Rimu road, Wixon road, Cemetery road, Tapper road, the Kennington-Waikawa highway and the Invercargill-Fortrose highway. Bridge repairs were executed on Trig road and the Lower Ferry road; a pipe culvert was renewed on the Seaward Downs-Gorge road, and culvert repairs were carried out on the InvercargillFortrose highway. The straightening and stacking of portion of the steel for the Mataura river bridge, Wyndham, was also attended to.
The surfacing gang carried out ditching work in the Awarua riding on Retreat road, and erected side rails on the culvert on Actaeon road. The installation of a new six-inch pipe culvert on the Grove Bush-Tussock Creek road, and the installation of two sixinch box culverts on Irving road, and general patching work on Bridgeman road, Edendale district roads, Mclvor and Irving roads were carried out. The cleaning of water-tables and culverts in the Wallacetown riding was undertaken on the Spar Bush-Drum-mond road and in fire Wallacetown township. Culvert repairs were effected on Cooper’s road. The installation of an ironbark box culvert on Clouston’s road, Otatara, bridge' repairs on Marshall road, Northope, and the delivery of beams for Moynihan’s bridge, Northope, were attended to. General patching work was carried out on the Oporo Flat road, Otahuti, Spar Bush and Taramoa roads. Maintenance gravel had been spread on footpaths in Collingwood, and the lowering of street drain in Dudley street, Collingwood, had been attended to.

Most of the employees in the Winton riding had been engaged in carting maintenance gravel from the plant at Benmore, and in addition to this work, the construction and gravelling of the uncompleted portion of the BenmoreOtapiri road was also begun. A culvert was lowered on Connor’s road and Shand’s road, and bridge repairs were carried out on Gap road. The surfacing gang in the Oreti riding had been engaged in roadside ditching on the Caroline-Dipton road, general maintenance work in the Athol township, the preparation of a plant site at the Mataura river, Ardlussa, the reconstruction of a bad corner on Orr’s road, Balfour; painting hand rails on the Stoney Ford bridge, on the ParawaNokomai road; repairs to Menlove’s Bridge, Athol, and the maintenance and cleaning of water-tables on McLeod’s road, Eyre Creek. The work carried out in the Hokonui riding had consisted of the lifting of the old culvert on the Gore-Reaby road, where a new pipe culvert was recently installed; the installation of a nine inch pipe culvert on Patterson’s road, repairs to the culvert on the WintonGore highway; the re-laying of an 18 inch pipe culvert on the Gore-Reaby road, general surfacing work. In the Waikaia riding maintenance gravel had been delivered to the Wai-kaia-Whitecombe road, general patching work was undertaken on Block X road, and deliveries of maintenance gravel to McKenzie’s road, Sterling’s road and McDonald’s road had been made. General maintenance and watertabling work was also carried out in the Waikaka district of this riding. The Mataura riding gang had carted materials and assisted with the construction of a reinforced concrete culvert on the Knapdale Church road; maintenance was also carted from plant No. 6 at Otamita to the Black Hills road, the Chatton district roads, Slopedown, and the Whare Range roads. The county bridge gang was employed in erecting a reinforced concrete culvert at the Otamita factory, and also in constructing a flood-gate on a large culvert on the Upper Knapdale road. The reading plant was shifted to the Marairua pit in preparation for maintenance work in the Tuturau district.
In addition to general patching work in the Fortrose, Tokanui and Otara districts, the men in the Toetoes riding had been engaged on the Boat Harbour road grading, and in delivering binding and body gravel; repairs were also carried out to the Waikawa stream bridge, Troupe road, and a bridge was redecked on the Kennington-Waikawa highway. Grading and repairs were also undertaken on the Wyndham-Mokoreta highway.
