CONSTRUCTION OF FOOTPATHS

OFFER TO RESIDENTS AT BALFOUR As the result of an application by the Balfour branch of the Farmers’ Union asking the Southland County Council to consider the tar-sealing of the roads in the township, the council at its meeting yesterday decided, instead of sealing the roads, to make an offer to reconstruct and gravel the footpaths at Balfour, provided the residents would contribute £5O towards the estimated cost of £250.

The engineer (Mr G. R. Milward) said that the cost of improving and sealing the railway station, post office and Balfour-Dipton roads would be £524.

“It appears to me that the residents of the township would obtain considerably more benefit if attention was given to footpath construction,” he said. “The laying of concrete kerbs and the reconstruction and gravelling of the , footpaths in a similar manner to the work undertaken in the Waikaia and the Waikaka townships could be carried out for approximately £250.”
