NEWSPAPER’S SUPPORT FOR MR WILLKIE
NEW YORK, September 19.
The New York Times, which is traditionally democratic and which supported President Roosevelt in 1932 and 1936, in an editorial announced that it was supporting Mr Wendell L. Willkie because he was more able to carry out the defence programme and stimulate economic and industrial activity. A third term for Mr Roosevelt would mean the shattering of the democratic tradition.’ The Times added that Mr Willkie and Mr Roosevelt were aware of the United States danger and both desired to aid Britain.
TERRIFIC ATTACK ON INVASION PORTS
The Royal Air Force last night again launched a terrific attack on the German invasion ports. The raid began soon after 9 p.m. and developed so furiously that many miles of the French coast seemed ablaze. Big fires broke out in Calais. The Germans put up a strong barrage and searchlights all along the coast swept the sky and many miles over.
