OBITUARY
MR A. W. GILLIES (United Press Association) AUCKLAND, August 26. The death has occurred after a brief illness of Mr Arthur William Gillies, a well-known Auckland sharebroker. Mr Gillies was born and educated in Dunedin, his father being the late Mr Robert Gillies, who at one time was the member for Bruce in the House of Representatives. He took up farming as a career and became the owner of a sheep station in North Otago. Later he disposed of the property and set up in business as a stock and station agent at Hawera. In this he was very successful and served for some time as Mayor of the town. Some time before the last war Mr Gillies bought a block of land at Kawaha Point on the western shore of Lake Rotorua and built a large house to which he retired after war broke out. He offered the Government the use of the property as a convalescent home for soldiers, but the offer was not utilized.
Removing to Auckland, he was appointed a member of the district repatriation board and voluntarily took charge of the scheme under which the farms of men on service were supervised and carried on by experienced farmers in their neighbourhoods. A number of years ago Mr Gillies entered into partnership with the late Mr Francis Hull, the father of the Auckland Stock Exchange. After Mr Hull’s death in 1933 he carried on the business under the style of Francis Hull and Company. He was latterly in partnership with Mr J. W. Coney. In 1938, with Mrs Gillies, he visited Europe and was able to realize a longcherished wish to join his brother, Sir Harold Gillies, the famous plastic surgeon for a salmon fishing trip to Iceland. During the latter part of his life Mr Gillies resided at Ranui, near Henderson. He is survived by his wife. Mr H. T. Gillies, Crown Solicitor at Hamilton, is 'a brother. M. EDOUARD MICHELIN (Received August 26, 6.30 p.m.) VICHY, August 25. The death has occured of M. Edouard Michelin, the tyre manufacturer, at the age of 84 years. MR J. F. McKENDRY The death occurred at Christchurch on Saturday of Mr J. F. McKendry, proprietor of McKendry’s Hotel. He was previously in Branson’s Hotel, Dunedin, and owned a number of trotters, including Logan Chief and Belinda. In his early days he was a prominent footballer, and president of the Athletic Football Club. He was also a keen member of the Avondale Golf Club.
