A Diary of Sport NO RETURN GAME WITH OTAGO

Basketball Match Abandoned

TOWN TEAMS DISPLAY AGAINST CENTRAL

By

ATTACK

The Southland first grade representative basketball team will not play a return game with Otago at Dunedin. It was thought that a return match might be played on Saturday, but the game has now been abandoned because of the defection of several of the players. First grade inter-club games will now be played as usual on Saturday. Central proved too good for the town second grade representative team at Winton last Saturday and gained a convincing win. However, the town players gave a good performance considering that they are young girls and have had comparatively little big-match play. It is certain that the experience they have gained in the games against Otago and Central will stand them in very good stead and next season the second grade side should be considerably stronger. In the game against Central the form displayed by the town players was perhaps not quite as good as in the Otago match, although J. Telfer and M. Parkinson were very consistent. The Central attacks impressed with their fine shooting. They made the most of their chances and missed few goals. Riverton will play the second grade team at Duke street on Saturday. Because of this game the second grade competition games will be started earlier than usual. However, if the day is wet and the play has to be transferred to the Drill Hall no second grade games will be played. A knock-out tournament will be played on September 14 to end the season and entries will close on September 4. The tournament will be in two sections, senior and junior, with handicaps. The annual presentation or trophies to the successful teams will take place at this tournament. The remaining representative game to be played this season is the game between the second grade side and Eastern, which will take place at Gore on September 7.
