BURNSIDE STOCK SALE

BIGGER ENTRY OF FAT CATTLE LAST WEEK’S HIGH RATES MAINTAINED (United Press Association) ' DUNEDIN, August 21. An entry of 256 fat cattle, compared with 153 last week, was penned at today’s Burnside stock sale. Included in the yarding were several consignments of prime heavy cattle, the balance being made up of medium descriptions with a smaller percentage of cows and heifers than usuai. The market opened with an easier tendency, all classes showing a reduction on the extreme rates of the previous sale. From the middle of the sale onwards there was a decided improvement, particularly for prime heavy bullocks, and values over the final stages for all bullocks were practically equivalent to last week’s rates. Cows and heifers throughout generally sold at 20/- below last week’s rates.

Extra prime heavy bullocks made to £27/12/6, prime £22/2/6 to £24/10/-, medium £lB/2/6 to £2O/12/6, and light from £l3/2/6 to £l5/12/6. There was a small entry of store cattle and these met with very keen competition, more especially for wellbred steers which sold in advance of last week’s rates.

The entry of 2003 fat sheep included a fair number of prime heavy wethers.' The market was erratic and the sale was showing prices for all classes 2/below last week’s rates. As the sale progressed with the benefit of outside competition there was keener inquiry and an improvement in values. Heavy ewes in particular were in demand and in some cases better' than at the previous sale. There was a very small entry of hoggets and these sold under keen competition. The best made up to 33/- and average hoggets from 23/- to 27/-. Extra heavy wethers made to 52/3, prime 43/3 to 47/9, prime medium 35/9 to 38/9, medium 30/3 to 32/3, and light from 23/- to 25/6. Extra prime heavy ewes made to 44/6, prime 35/3 to 37/9, prime medium 28/9 to 32/3, and light 22/- to 25/9. There was a fair-sized entry of fat pigs, 2006 being forward. These met with good competition and prices generally were on a par with the last sale s rates. A small entry of store pigs was forward and prices were very firm on late rates. The values for fat sheep were maintained at recent rates and the sale for store sheep was moderately good. An increase of 3/- a head was shown in the early part of the fat sheep sale, but buying became . patchy and the over-all prices were on a par with recent rates. The prices in some cases early in the day exceeded £3 per 1001 b. Good beef made £2/10/- and best up to £2/15/per 1001 b. Best steers made £27/2/6, with other prime beasts from £lB/10/-.
