GORE
REVIEW OF YEAR’S WORK A. AND P. ASSOCIATION “It is pleasing to record that the association has made steady headway during the year,” states the annual report of the Gore Agricultural and Pastoral Association, which is to be presented at the annual meeting at Gore oh Friday afternoon. “The capital account shows an increase from £6360/19/3 to £6424/18/3. The expenditure reveals that the following non-recurring items were met during the year:—Purchase of land, £167/1/-; preparation of grounds, £B7/7/6; water supply, £l6; loose boxes, £3O; total, £3OO/8/6. The total overdraft has been increased by £lll. “The grounds committee has had a busy year carrying out the improvements in addition to the usual routine work of looking after the association’s property and grounds and the thanks of the members is tendered to them for their unrewarded efforts.
“With the exception of the horse parade which had to be abandoned, the usual fixtures were held during the year. “The show was held in December as usual, but the takings showed a shrinkage compared with the previous year, no doubt due to the proximity of the Royal Show which was held in Invercargill during the following week. The profit on the fixture was £l6. “The ram fairs (stud and flock), held in March and April respectively were quite successful, the former showing a profit of £22/18/3, and the latter £37/10/7. J. Mosley and Sons, of Clydevale, also held a special ram sale on the grounds which returned £l7/17/- to the association’s funds.
“The general account showed a drop of £lOl/13/6 and the bank overdraft was £192/15/10,” continues the report. “The new grounds purchased during the past three years had been cleaned up and graded and were in condition for spring sowing. “The membership stands at 532 (16 honorary life members and 516 active members), as against 531 last year. During the year one honorary life member (Mr D. L. Poppelwell) and four active members, Messrs J. S. Smith, T. Newell, A. W. Pannett and D. Macdonald) passed away and the sympathy of the members is extended to the relations.”
The Meat Board’s export lamb competition had been held this year under modified conditions as the war situation did not permit of a special shipment of the entries for London judging. Eastern Southland succeeded in securing first place in the judging which took place at Makarewa in January of this year. Mr James Drysdale, of Brydone, was adjudged the owner of the champion pen. The flock ewe competition was held in April. There were seven entries and Morrison Bros, again secured first place. To fill the various ordinary vacancies on the committee the following candidates have been nominated:—President, Mr R. H. Dickie; vice-president, Mr W. G. Ladbrook; bon. treasurer, Mr G. W. Whittingham; committee, Messrs J. Burnett, D. Dickie. J. Elder, G. R. Herron, J. Logan, W. Sadlier, Henry Smith, P. Turnbull, W. G. Mackay, James Dickie and E. A. Cameron. The number of nominations not exceeding the vacancies, all will be declared elected.
