GOLDEN WEDDING CELEBRATED

MR AND MRS J. MITCHELL Mr and Mrs J. Mitchell, two wellknown residents of Ythan street, Invercargill, celebrated their golden wedding on Saturday. Mr Mitchell was born at St. Ives, England, in 1861 and came out to New Zealand in the Waitara, arriving at Bluff on December 5, 1878. He was Mayor of South Invercargill for five years and a member of the Borough Council for seven years. He worked for 30 years for William Todd and Co., Ltd., The Rialto, and it was here that he became known to many Southland residents. He was also a member of the Garrison Band for 30 years. Mrs Mitchell was born at Gloucester, England, and arrived at Port Chalmers in the Scimitar in 1874; she was formerly Miss Calcutt. Mr and Mrs Mitchell had nine of a family, but only four survive. They are Mrs L. Wilder - moth and Mrs B. Lindsay (Invercargill), Mr S. Mitchell (Bluff) and Mr J. Mitchell (Dunedin). There are seven grandchildren.
