RAIDERS BROKEN UP BY SHATTERING FIRE (United Press Association—Telegraph Copyright) (Received July 21, 6.30 p.m.) LONDON, July 20. Nearly 100 aeroplanes engaged in a fierce air battle off the south-east coast this evening. German dive bombers dropped more than 50 bombs among a convoy of ships steaming in the Channel. Shattering fire from warships and shore batteries drove off the raiders. The entire formation was broken up and fled across the Channel. Eye-witnesses said the German bombers were most reckless. They dived almost to the decks of the ships, but when the smoke . cleared away the ships were proceeding normally. Several planes twice raided a south-west English town this morning, dropping a dozen bombs and damaging shops and cottages. The casualties so far are one killed and a number injured.

The Air Ministry reports that at least 12 enemy planes were destroyed on Friday.

The Ministry of Home Security states that 336 civilians were killed and 476 seriously injured for the month beginning on June 18, when large-scale bombing of Britain began. The largest number killed in any locality on any occasion was 32.
