LOWER PRICES FOR 2 . FAT SHEEP FAT CATTLE MEET WITH GOOD DEMAND (United Press Association) DUNEDIN, July 17. With the exception of wether classes, which maintained late rates, prices for i fat sheep at the Burnside sale today t showed a decrease, but fat cattle met - with a good demand and prices were f on a par with last week’s rates. i There was a large entry of 2565 fat 3 sheep. The bulk of the wethers forward - were confined to medium descriptions, 5 mostly fine-woolled sorts. The sale was erratic, opening with cautious competition and values for ewes at the t start were in places from 4/- to 5/lower than the high rates at the prej ceding market. As the sale progressed, z with the benefit of outside competition, t there was a gradual firming in values, t and at the end prices for all grades of _ ewes were lower to the extent of from ’ 1/- to 1/6. Extra prime heavy wethers z made to 50/-, prime heavy from 40/- to i 45/6, medium quality from 34/- to 38/- and light down to 27/-. Extra t prime heavy young ewes made to 43/6, prime heavy from 34/- to 39/-, medium . from 27/- to 29/6 and light down to ■ 18/6. The fat cattle entry totalled 276, there being an excellent showing of 1 prime grades of both bullocks and heifers. Extra prime heavy bullocks made to £23/7/6, prime heavy from ’ £l7/2/6 to £l9/12/6, medium from 1 £l3/12/6 to £l5/7/6 and light down 3 to £9/2/6. Extra prime heavy heifers ’ made to £l6/7/6, prime heifers from > £lO/7/6 to £l3/2/6, medium from ■ £7/17/6 to £lO/7/6 and light down to ■ £5/17/6. Extra prime cows made to ■ £l4/2/6, medium from £B/17/6 to > £lO/2/6 and light down to £4/17/6. : The entry of store cattle numbered : 150. Store cows of all descriptions sold t at full rates. ADDINGTON MARKET GENERAL IMPROVEMENT IN QUALITY (United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, July 17. A general improvement in quality with, better prices in most sections was shown at Addington today. Fat sheep and store sheep were distinctly better, but there was a decline in the values for cattle. The fat sheep entry was the smallest for some time. A succession of small entries caused a keen demand from the trade and there was a sharp lift in prices. Good ewes were better by 4/to 5/- a head at the start and although this eased a little the average rise was 3/- a head. Good wethers showed an improvement of about 2/-. Good mediumweights were in keen demand. Prime heavy wethers made £l/19/6 to £2/3/6, with tops to £2/12/10, prime mediumweights £l/15/- to £l/19/-, ordinary sorts £l/8/- to £l/14/-, light lines to £l/7/-, best ewes £l/11/- to £l/15/-, with special pens to £2/2/4, medium grades £l/6/— to £l/10/-, ordinary sorts £l/2/6 to £l/5/-. About 800 head of store sheep were yarded. Two-tooth half-bred ewes made £l/8/9 and all good sorts improved by 2/- to 3/- a head. Soundmouth Corriedale ewes sold at £l/4/and some open-woolled types made £l/2/6. Lighter sorts made 18/6. Fail-ing-mouth half-breds made 15/-. Twotooth wethers realized 20/- and six and eight-tooths 16/10. The fat cattle yarding of 480 was a little smaller, but the quality was better. An easing of 20/- a head, equal to the advance last week, was apparent for the best lines, medium sorts maintaining values. Best beef sold at £2/5/to £2/7/6 per 1001 b, medium at £2/2/to £2/4/-, and rough down to £l/7/6. Some good averages were secured. Best steers realized £l5/15/- to £l7, with tops at £2O/2/6, and prime medium quality made £l4 to £l5/10/-. Ordinary grades brought £lO to £l3, with light pens at £9/15/-. Good heifers made £lO to £ll/10/-, best pens making to £l7/2/6, lighter sorts from £7 to £9/10/-. Prime cows brought £8 to £lO, medium lines £5/15/- to £7/5/-, lighter grades about £5/10/-. The porker entry was the smallest of the season and prices hardened throughout over the last two races, the values being then the highest of the season. There was excellent quality in the chopper section, £B/16/- being paid in one case. The bacon market was also keen. The average price per lb for porkers was 8.1 d to and for baconers 7id to Sid.
