BUDGET DEBATE ENDS
37 Speakers Take Part ME NASH REPLIES TO POINTS RAISED (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, July 17. After the back benchers had dealt with a variety of topics and the Minister of Finance (the Hon. W. Nash) had replied to points raised during the last seven sitting days, the Budget debate ended at 10 o’clock this evening. The speeches during the day included one by Mr W. J. Polson (Nat., Stratford), who had a little criticism to make about the functions of the War Cabinet and made it clear that he could not bind himself to support any domestic measure with which he did not agree. The feature of Mr Nash’s reply was the assurance he gave that New Zea-land-owned overseas securities would not be realized unless this course was absolutely necessary for war purposes. Altogether 37 speakers took part in the debate, 19 Government, 15 Opposition and three others. /’ “ALL SHOULD TAKE FULL SHARE” HARD WORK OF WAR EFFORT (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, July 17. “I do not want to be sycophantic or kow-tow to anybody, and therefore. I support the Minister of Marine (the Hon. D. G. McMillan) in his plea that the rich people, including the rich women, in this country should take their share with the poor people in the hard work of New Zealand’s war effort," said Mr C. L. Carr (Lab.. Tiinaru) when speaking in the Budget debate in the House of Representatives today. He realized that he was not likely to make friends with many of those he was referring to, but he would not imitate Mr Ramsay Macdonald who, when he had “sold out” the working people, said, “every duchess in Britain will want to kiss me tonight.” Laughter greeted this remark and when it had subsided Mr Carr said that that comment was meant to be humorous, but it represented the death of what had once been a great soul. “I want to say that everybody from the richest to the poorest, from the highest to the humblest, should take their full share in this war effort,” he added. “I feel confident that the Government will do its utmost to see that this is done.”
