Dense Clouds Of Smoke Seen After Attack
DIRECT HITS SCORED AT TOBRUK (United Press Association—Telegraph Copyright) (Received July 17,11.30 p.m.) LONDON, July 16. Aeroplanes of the Royal Air Force have carried out a raid on the Italian naval base at Tobruk, according to an air communique from Cairo. It is believed that several hits were scored and the pilots saw dense clouds of smoke rising in one area. In the recent Italian raid on Alexandria one person was killed and two others were injured. The raid lasted about an hour. A Valetta message states that enemy aeroplanes raided Malta yesterday. One was shot down in flames. One British fighter was lost. It is reported from Alexandria that enemy aeroplanes raided the fleet in the moonlight last night, but were driven off by fierce anti-aircraft fire. Some bombs were dropped, but no ships were hit. Neither the condition of the ships nor the spirit of the men bears out in the slightest degree the Italian claims of victory in the British-Italian encounter on July 9.
