Shields VOLUNTARY SYSTEM NEARING END MINISTER’S EXPLANATION An explanation of several points arising out of the decision of the Government to terminate voluntary recruitment on July, 22 and to obtain men for the armed forces by ballot after that date was given in a statement by the Minister of Defence (the Hon. F. Jones). “All men who have enlisted since June 24,” Mr Jones said, “have enlisted for service either at home or abroad and can be drafted to the Expeditionary Force, if eligible and within the age limits laid down for this force. “Territorials enlisted for service in the Territorial Force before June 24 will not be transferred to the Expeditionary Force unless they are drawn in a ballot, and in that case they must be single and betwen the ages of 21 and 40. All single eligible men in the Territorial Force are, of course, subject to the ballot for the Expeditionary Force. “Classes 1 and 111 of the National Military Reserve are liable for home service, and any single men in these classes are also liable to be called in any ballot for the Territorial or Expeditionary Force. Men in these classes of the reserve may, if they so desire, volunteer up to July 22 for service at home or abroad, whichever the Government may require, provided they are within the age group specified and have not more than two children. “As already announced by the Prime Minister, the Cabinet has approved of the recommendation of the War Council that voluntary enlistment for the New Zealand Naval Forces will be allowed to continue to meet the normal long-service requirements of these forces or the Royal Navy which may be approved.”
