JAPANESE SEEK APOLOGY Arrest Of Men By U.S. Marines AMERICAN GENERAL ANNOYED (United Press Assn—Telegraph Copyright) (Received July 10, 2 a.m.) SHANGHAI, July 9. The Japanese Embassy spokesman, Mr Ken Tsurumi, said that the Japanese protest about the arrest of plain clothes men by American marines required an American apology, which he hoped would be forthcoming. “There is no question of the seriousness of the case, which is regarded as a grave insult to the Japanese Army,” he said. “However, I do not believe that either the Japanese or the American authorities will pursue such an unwise policy as to aggravate the case until it affects the whole relationship between the two countries.” General Peck, the American commander, is asking the Japanese to explain why two Japanese tanks crossed the marine sector yesterday. He is also directing their attention to the “discourtesy” in not giving advance notice of Mr Nishio s visit to the Park Hotel and also the discourtesy in recent cases when truckloads of Japanese soldiers were transported through the marine sector. GERMAN AIR RAIDS In London the Air Ministry reported that enemy aircraft crossed the eastern and southern coasts of England and the north-east of Scotland during the night. Bombs were dropped, damaging buildings. There were very few casualties. JAPANESE REPRESENTATION The Japanese Cabinet has decided to make another representation to Britain demanding reconsideration of the Burma question.
