PROSE-READING AT WOMEN’S CLUB
MRS R. N. TODD’S TALK ON REPERTORY PLAYS
Two prose-readings formed the first part of the programme at the Southland "Womens’ Club last night, when the Play Reading Circle held its usual gathering. Mrs H. H. Royds read “Penelope’s Experiences” by Kate Douglas Wiggin and Mrs G. R. Milward read “The Candle’s Summer- Holiday,” by Douglas Jerrold. Mrs R. N. Todd spoke on repertory plays she had seen in London, including “Under My Hat,” with Jack Hulbert and Cicely Courteneidge, and “Me and My Gal,” starring Lupino Lane, which ran twice nightly for more than two years in London and which originally introduced “The Lambeth Walk.” Other plays Mrs Todd saw were “The Young Idea,” by Noel Coward, “Loyalties,” by John Galsworthy and “Dangerous Corners,” by J. B. Priestley, which she saw performed by the Oxford players in their own theatre. She was also present at an open-air historical pageant in Scotland, acted by between 200 and 300 players whose ancestors had taken part in the actual history.
