“SOUTHWARD ADVANCE” POLICY MENTIONED
(United Press Association—Telegraph Copyright) (Received July 1,10.30 p.m.) TOKYO, June 30. The newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun says that a spokesman of the Hata political group informed the Prime Minister (Rear Admiral Mitsumasa Yonai) of the army’s determination to take a “dauntless attitude” in the establishment of the new order notwithstanding certain British and American friction which would be unavoidable. The Hata political parties attacked the statement by the Foreign Minister (Mr Hachiro Arita) as spiritless.
The Nakajinia faction of the Seyi Yukai passed a resolution “strengthening the Axis and the ‘southward advance’ policy.”
The spokesman of the Foreign Office (Mr Summa) said: “We are unable to understand the Hong Kong reports of evacuation. We have not requested evacuation as part of the protest over the Burma supplies. We have certain plans about the Burma supply route. However, we must await the British reply.” He said he had not received answers to the request for the withdrawal of British and French forces from Shanghai.
Military circles in Hong Kong reiterated that the border position was unchanged and continued very quiet.
