WORK, FIGHT AND PAY
DOMINION’S BATTLE FOR EXISTENCE
WORLD A “VULTURES’
PICNIC”
(United Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 1.
“We are living in a world that is a vultures’ picnic,” said the Minister of National Service (the Hon. R. Semple) addressing a large attendance at the Chamber of Commerce today. “We in New Zealand will have to work, fight and pay for our existence. Party politics have faded into oblivion. If we don’t get together we may not have a Government or a country to defend.” Referring to outside criticism, Mr Semple said the Government could not send one man to England unless England asked for him to be sent. “It is not men that Britain wants at present; is mechanism and food.” Recently advice was received at 8 a.m. that 1800 specialists, including railwaymen, surveyors, engineers and mechanics, were needed. By 10 o’clock that evening 1400 men had been mobilized and the following day the War Office was advised that the detachment was ready.
