BOOKLET FOR USE OF FARMERS

VALUABLE INFORMATION COMPILED “The time is fast approaching when farmers must pay more attention to the increasing stock diseases, insect pests and fungoid troubles if they are to maintain a profitable return from their land,” states a preface to “Handy Farming Information, a booklet which has recently been published under the direction of the Southland provincial executive' of the Farmers’ Union. The treatment of ailments in sheep, cattle, horses, dogs and pigs is dealt with in the book in the compilation of which Mr G. A. Hamilton, of Lumsden, has played a leading part. Sections are also devoted to the apiary, poultry-keeping, cropping and the orchard and the garden. A particularly interesting section is that headed “Miscellaneous,” in which many helpful hints are given. Tables of standard weights and measures as well as calculations of value to the farmer are also included. The booklet is handy for quick reference and in the preface it is stated that it should be of considerable value to the farmer who is hesitating whether to send for professional aid or to use his own judgment and skill in treating an animal. It is considered that the booklet will be of special interest to the farmer situated in the more remote parts of New Zealand who has to depend on his own resources in time of need.

“In asking the assistance of every branch of the Farmers’ Union to further the sale of this book, we are not looking for profits for our executive, as the price charged for the book is

not more than the actual cost of printing. What we do ask is the friendly cooperation and assistance of all to give some measure of benefit to the farming community in general.” The booklet is priced at 4/-.
