STEWART ISLAND

PATRIOTIC WORK At a meeting of the Stewart Island Patriotic Committee, at which Mr W. T. Widdowson presided, the collectors handed in their lists of subscriptions which totalled £l9/1/9. In this amount was included the school children’s donations. A motion of thanks was passed to the collectors who had conducted such a splendid canvass. Altogether three collections have been made, the total amount being £55/11/3. A donation of 5/6 was received from Mrs W. J. Hamilton for incidental exi penses. It was decided to send the following telegram to the Government through the Hon. Adam Hamilton, who is at present taking care of Brigadier Hargest’s constituency:— “The patriotic committee on Stewart Island is doing everything possible for | the patriotic funds, but regrets to learn that the Government is spending £lOO,OOO for a new building for the Marketing Department at a time when every penny of the taxpayers' money should be used in producing military equipment and munitions. We emphatically protest against this action of the Government and feel, sure we are voicing the opinion of all the patriotic committees in New Zealand at the present time.” PERSONAL

Mr George Hicks, of the Invercargill Post Office staff, is spending his annual holidays with his parents, Mr and Mrs R. C. Hicks, Ferndale House.
