Mr W. Grieve, chairman of the executive committee of the Southland Provincial Patriotic Council, leaves this morning on a visit to the north. Mr Grieve will take the opportunity of visiting Burnham and Trentham camps and he will also visit hospitals in the north where Southland soldiers are patients. He will be away for 10 days. Mr S. W. Gaspar, national president of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants, arrives in Invercargill by the mid-day express today. Tonight he will attend a meeting and social of the society at Bluff and will return north on Sunday. During his visit to Invercargill Mr Gaspar will be the guest of Mr M. W. Grantham, George street. Mr J. E. McClean, of the staff of the Bank of New South Wales, Invercargill, has received advice of his transfer to the bank’s Hokitika branch. Mr McClean leaves today to take up his new duties.
Mr L. R. Lopdell has been appointed secretary of the Southland Recruiting Committee in place of Mr L. A. Blackmore, who on Tuesday goes into camp for six month with the Territorial Force. Mr A. E. Dawson, accountant at the Dunedin branch of the State Advances Corporation, will act as manager of the Invercargill branch during the absence of the manager, Major C. B. Lees, in camp with the Territorial Force.
Mr D. M. Malloch has been appointed to represent the Southland branch of the New Zealand Society of Accountants on the Invercargill Chamber of Commerce.
Mr J. S. Heywood will leave by the express this morning on a business visit to Wellington. Mr A. Stuart, instructor in agriculture at Invercargill, will leave by the express tomorrow night for Christchurch, where he will attend a meeting to make final arrangements for the erection of linen flax processing plants in Southland.
Mr W. George will return to Invercargill by this afternoon’s express. For 25 years’ efficient service with the New Zealand Territorials, Major F. E. Dornwell, now attached to Divisional Headquarters of the 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force in Egypt, has been awarded the Efficiency Decoration. Before the war, Major Dornwell, who lived at New Brighton, served with the Ist Battalion of the Canterbury Territorial Regiment.
Mr J. A. Clark, president of the Winton Football Club, was granted five months leave of absence at a meeting of the club committee last night. Mr Clark goes into camp on Tuesday with officers and non-commissioned officers of the Territorial Force.
Corporal R. Witting, who has been on leave from Burnham, leaves by this morning’s-express for Trentham. Mrs N. R. Witting will accompany him as far as Christchurch. Private R. B. Shaw, of Winton, who has been home on leave, left yesterday on his return to camp; Before his departure, he was met by members of the Winton Soldiers’ Recognition Committee and presented with a sum of money. The presentation was made by the Deputy Mayor (Mr N. Metzger) who wished Private Shaw the best of luck and a safe return. Constable W. G. Wood, of Winton, has returned from his annual leave. Mr T. J. S. Daniel, a member of the Town Hall office staff who retired from yesterday, was bidden farewell at a function yesterday afternoon. A presentation was made to Mr Daniel by the town clerk, Mr W. F. Sturman, who Wished him a happy retirement. Messrs J. H. Leigh and B. N. Challis also spoke and Mr Daniel replied.
