WOMEN’S HOCKEY ON LONG GRASS

Collegiate Superior

To Technical

By

ROLL IN

Saturday’s women’s hockey games were played ”in fine weather on a heavy ground and long grass, which did not assist in any way for good hockey. In the Collegiate-Technical game good hockey was seen, though Collegiate was definitely superior throughout. The Technical team is still improving, but is no match for the experienced Collegiate team. M. Anderson, Technical goalkeeper, gave a good showing as goalie and made many good saves. She has a good idea of the correct play for goalkeepers. Tire Technical full-backs, B. Greer and H. Newlands, made some' good moves in defending and broke up many forward rushes of the Collegiate forwards. The half-back line, O. Kimble, A. Clearwater and I. Hinton, has yet a great deal to learn in combination; the absence of L. McDermott was most noticeable. O. Kimble and A. Clearwater are keen enough, but I. Hinton does not take the game seriously enough and is inclined to let her fellow team mates down.

Among the forwards O. Hemmings, R. Watson, J. McGregor and R. Brosnan were predominant, although J. McGregor is out of position. J. Sycamore, left wing, and R. Watson, right wing, are out of position a great deal and would do ■ well to keep out nearer the sidelines.

It is hard to pick and choose among the Collegiate players, but against such opposition every Collegiate player was seen to advantage. Collegiate fielded only eight players. D. Gray, A. Shaw and N. Wylie, forwards, were dangerous to the opposing goal when in the circle. P- Millard, M. McLeod and O. Butler were good on defence, as were E. Blackie and A. Bateman as full-backs. On several occasions Technical was unlucky not to score more as several shots missed narrowy Invercargill is an improved team this

season. Invercargill is particularly strong in half-backs and full-backs, but with the exception of M. Howie and E. Edwards, the forward line is weak. With a forward line of such weakness very little can be expected in the way of goals. If this forward line can be considerably strengthend, Invercargill will be a team to be reckoned with. P. Hemmings, a new player for Invercargill, is doing well at left wing. G. Tomlins has still to be able to combine to advantage, while F. Watts is inclined to obstruct a great deal. M. Elliotte was unfortunate in being injured and was replaced by B. Swale. H. Sandri was good on defence and was ably assisted by P. Hall. F. Foulston and M. Kelly were very good on defence and blocked many forward rushes. P. Sinclair, in goal, was called on for a great deal of work and acquitted herself well. GOOD FORWARD LINE

The Ex-High forward line was up to its best standard this season, but had to work hard to score goals. The combination of J. Wallace, S. Monk, L. Purvis, H. Monk and M. Woods was the best seen yet by these forwards. H. Hansen, L. Fraser and M. Ford were good in combination and staved off many Invercargill attacks. E. Fox and A. Anderson were not particularly busy, but when needed were right on their game. F. Monk, when the occasion arose, showed she is still a good goalkeeper. Advice has been received that in all probability the K Cup tournament will be held at Auckland. It appears that in the event of insufficient entries being received, the tournament may be postponed. It is a pity that this year’s tournament could not have been held in Wellington in order to centralize it and save any very long-distance travelling by a Southland team.
